The Cuban Cocktail: The Mojito

Mojitos are a tasty Cuban concoction of white rum, mint, sugar, soda water, and lime.

History

The history of the mojito almost parallels that of its country of origin. For the most part, people recognize Havana as the founding location of the mojito--and many bars and restaurants in the city will have you believe that they’re the first one to ever create it.

One theory states that long ago, sailors encountered South American natives in their search for various tropical illnesses they’d contracted at sea. A concoction of herbs and citrus helped alleviate their pains from scurvy and dysentery, while the alcoholic aguardiente, which is a type of rum, relieved them of the struggles of their effort.

Another theory states that Sir Francis Drake, the famed English explorer, created the cocktail from his experiences abroad with different spices and flavors he discovered. This theory stems from the drink known today as “El Draque”, which uses the same ingredients while replacing the rum in a mojito with brandy.

Still with all the interesting theories around the origin, the mojito didn’t become popularized until the famous American author Ernest Hemmingway (who was also well known to be an avid drinker) took it up as a favorite of his.

Making a mojito is a rather simple affair for such an incredible cocktail. To make an authentic one requires a bit more attention to detail.
